It was a cold night but that didn’t matter to the audience which was transfixed by the talent at our Songwriters Session at Sappho's on Thursday 14 July.
Matt Fletcher’s songs are Sydney’s answer to Noah Gundersen’s indie folk but pared back to acoustic guitar (a Hummingbird no less!) and vocals. Matt adds a hint of Blues to his songs and the result is compelling. Angus Gilmour’s original songs pick up where Nick Drake left off. His voice and guitar skills reveal one of Sydney’s most humble hidden talents and my bet is that a lack of social media accounts won’t hinder his progress as an emerging singer/songwriter. The cold somewhat subdued Lucie Tiger’s normally upbeat performance but this diverted attention to the melodies and heartfelt themes that characterise her songs. If you can imagine a blend of Jason Isbell and Miranda Lambert, then you’ll get an idea of Lucie’s music.
As always, the audience was generous with their donations and special thanks are due to Sappho’s for hosting the night - they’re so supportive of live music and local artists.
