Known as a hip recording town since the 1960s, the Shoals' status in the music business didn’t stop last century. For a town that often flies under the radar, its reputation in the music industry and its traditions - established by the likes of producer Rick Hall, session musician-turned producer Jimmy Johnson and his fellow Swampers - have continued post-pandemic. 

For more than half a century, the Shoals has attracted musicians, songwriters, and music producers of Grammy-award winning calibre, many of who share an impressive tally of cuts on hit singles and albums. This tradition has not stopped but is gaining strength with an ever-evolving cohort of musicians, songwriters and music producers whose output continues to enhance the reputation of the Shoals on the banks of the ‘singing river’ - as the locals call the Tennessee River which cuts through the Shoals.

There's some great insight into the legendary Rick Hall, who established FAME Studios as well as the Swampers, who departed FAME to set up the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. The film features Aretha Franklin, Gregg Allman, Keith Richards, Alicia Keys and Bono to name just a few. It also features people who continue to live and work in the Shoals.
