Welcome to the next in our 2120 Music Artist Profile series featuring Angus Gilmore.
How and where do you prefer to write?
I prefer to write at home. Playing music is one of the main ways I like to relax so I’ll usually just muck around on guitar and sometimes I’ll come up with something I think is good. I definitely never sit down with the intention of trying to come up with a new song though, I’ve never been able to do that.
Do you write the music first and then the lyrics; or, the lyrics first; or, both together
Always the guitar first and then I base the lyrics on the vibe I get from the guitar parts.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I really just listen to music I love and try and figure out what makes the songs so good.
Who are your favourite songwriters?
I love The Beatles and Elliott Smith and more recently Mitski and Alex G.
Which artists have influenced your songwriting?
I’m heavily influenced by Nick Drake and the sounds he is able to get from a single acoustic guitar. Otherwise far too many to list.
Has your songwriting changed over time? How?
The biggest change has been with my singing over time. As I’ve got more confident as a singer my singing parts have evolved and I’ve been using my guitar as less of a crutch.
Do you co-write and if so, do you find it inspiring?
I’ve written songs with my band separately to my solo playing so I get to write collaboratively as well as on my own. It's been great having the two different experiences with songwriting.
We love listening to Angus play - he's great live! Make sure you catch him at a gig soon or follow on Spotify profile
