2120 Music is named after the location of Chess Records studio at 2120 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, and the Rolling Stones track 2120 South Michigan Avenue, named after the location of Chess Records and recorded there in 1964.
Chess Records was originally established in 1950 by two brothers, Leonard and Phil Chess. Chess Records was based at several locations on the south side of Chicago, before Chess Records studi at 2120 S Michigan Avenue was established in 1957. The Chess brothers produced many tracks that became pivotal to the development and emergence of blues and rock music. The Chess brothers recorded many hugely influential musicians including Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.
Back in 1951, Chess Records forged an alliance with Sam Phillips of the Memphis Recording Service in Memphis, which later became the legendary Sun Records. Sam Phillips, who produced recordings by Elvis Presley, Roy Borbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Howlin' Wolf at his Memphis studio, supplied recordings to the Chicago-based Chess brothers for national distribution. Interestingly, Sam Phillips was born in Florence Alabama and he and his family founded Big River Broadcasting Corporation which still operates several radio stations including WXFL.
Both Chess Records and Sun Studios had a huge impact on the development of rock ‘n’ roll. Keith Richards and Mick Jagger both bought mail order records from Chess before they met each other and formed The Rolling Stones. The band went to Chess Records in 1964 and recorded 2120 South Michigan Avenue along with 15 other tracks over a two-day period. Five of those tracks were released on their EP Five by Five (August 1964). The track is credited to ‘Nanker Phelge’, a pseudonym used by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger for some of their earlier recordings.
We've been lucky to visit Chicago on several occasions and pay homage to the Chess Records studio (now Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation). We visited both 2120 South Michigan, Chicago, and Sun Records in May 2011, and again in November 2019. In a cool coincidence, Lucie Tiger, who now resides in the Shoals Alabama, has recorded at Sun Studio and has also had multiple songs played on radio stations across America including WXFL.
From 2012 onwards, 2120 Music, operating under the name of Indigo Kicks, booked band shows in Sydney, Australia. In 2018, 2120 Music signed Lucie Tiger and has since promoted this artist and booked numerous songwriter showcase events as well as band shows in Sydney and the United States.
