Welcome to the next in our 2120 Music Artist Profile series - where artists that we've worked with talk about their creativity.
How and where do you prefer to write?
I have guitars in my living room and spare room so they’re always there when I’m in the mood to play, I usually explore the guitar first, then I just start singing a melody of random lyrics until i recognise a theme that I can work with. It can take anywhere from one night to several months to finish a song, some songs never get finished and that’s ok I think. I like to record the drafts of songs on my phone and then listen to them in the car, it’s nice listening to the early drafts after a song is finished because you see how far they have come.
Where do you go for inspiration?
My inspiration is my own life experiences; I often find my songwriting picks up when I’m experiencing strong emotions in life, whether it’s from love, loss, friendships etc. it’s not necessarily all about me either, sometimes I write from the perspective of other people I know and their experiences. I also get inspired by other artist’s music.
Who are your favourite songwriters?
I grew up learning the songs of Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Paul Dempsey, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Kooks, Death Cab for Cutie and also some folk singers that my dad listened to like Simon and Garfunkel and James Taylor. All of these artists and any new music I listen to influences my songwriting.
Has your songwriting changed over time? How?
I guess when you start out you don’t have much life experience to work with, so while your songs might be catchy there maybe isn’t a lot of substance behind them. I think as you experience more of the highs and lows of life you have a broader spectrum of material to tap into for your songwriting.
Do you co-write and if so, do you find it inspiring?
I don’t co-write, it’s just me and my guitars but I would love to co-create if the opportunity arises, some friends and I have booked a rehearsal space next week so I’m looking forward to what might come of that. I also made some connections via Kiln Studios here in Sydney where I recorded my demo EP that’s on Spotify under Patrick Landy.
